The Week of Clean: Cleaning Your Bling

Jewelry is a huge part of your outfit, and if you’ve got the baubles it’s important to clean them on a regular basis so they sparkle their brightest. I’ve got the tips to make sure your jewels sparkle like new in the convenience of your home.

First – if you can’t remember the last time your jewelry was professionally cleaned and polished I recommend you start there. A jeweler will get your jewelry cleaned the best. I take mine in every year. My jeweler, Smith’s Jewelers in Noblesville, does this for free for my pieces I bought there. They will also check your settings to ensure you don’t have any loose prongs. What I’m sharing is for at home maintenance the rest of the year.

Here’s what I do every week to make sure my jewelry looks its best.

  1. Polish – this is a critical step I used to skip. You’d be amazed how much even Gold jewelry tarnishes. I like to use Connoisseurs Dry Jewelry Wipes – you throw them away when done. 20130902-105545.jpg
  2. Clean – I have a GemOro UltraSpa ultrasonic cleaner and use GemOro jewelry cleaner with it. I usually run two ultrasonic cycles. If you don’t want to invest in a cleaner like this one you should be able to get a plain ultrasonic cleaner for under $100.20130902-105638.jpg
  3. Steam/Scrub – my jewelry cleaner has a steamer on it that I love to force any remaining debris out of my jewelry. You can use hot water and a gentle jewelry brush as well.
  4. Dry
  5. Admire – I love looking at my clean jewelry and I hope you do too!
